2022 Ford F-150 vs. 2022 F-150 Lightning

The Popular Full-Size Ford Truck Goes Electric

The Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck has been a constant favorite for years. Whether drivers choose the gas-powered F-150 or electric F-150 Lightning, the full-size truck retains the quality engineering, technology, and styling that makes them uniquely Ford.

At Wood Motor Ford Carthage near Joplin, we’re excited to feature the 2022 Ford F-150 and 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, giving drivers plenty of options for their towing and payload needs.

Comparing the Combustion Engine Choices to the Dual-Electric Motors

The Ford F-150 truck has a standard powertrain that includes a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Drivers can choose trims with the twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 or a 5.0-liter V8 with 325 and 400 horsepower, respectively. The F-150 also comes with an optional mild-hybrid with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 paired to an electric motor for 430 horsepower.

The compression ratio on the 3.3-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 is 12:1, while the 2.6L EcoBoost V6 has a 10:1 compression ratio. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 Hybrid has a 10:5:1 ratio. Because the F-150 Lightning does not have pistons or transmission, it does not have a compression ratio.

The F-150 Lightning comes with two electric motors with either the standard or extended battery range. The standard 98-kWh battery has up to 230 miles of all-electric range. The 131-kWh battery provides up to 300 miles of range. Charging with a Level 2 system takes 14 hours. With a Level 3 Fast-Charging Station, the Lightning needs about 45 minutes for a 70% charge.

The dual motors mounted above the axles gives the Lightning standard all-wheel drive. The motors combine to deliver an impressive 426 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 MPH speed is about 4.5 seconds.

The Lightning with the standard battery and the Max Tow Package can tow 14,400 pounds. With the same package and the extended battery, it can tow 17,300 pounds thanks to the impressive torque in the dual-electric motors.

The 2022 F-150 with the best towing capacity is the SuperCab or SuperCrew outfitted with the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. This configuration can tow 14,000 pounds regardless of the bed size.

Equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360 Safety Features

All Ford F-150 trucks come with the Ford Co-Pilot360 safety features that include Forward Collision Warning, Forward Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, and a Rearview Camera. Buyers who upgrade to trims like the XLT, King Ranch, or Lariat get Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist, and Rear Parking Sensors.

The Lightning Pro has the fewest safety features, and the higher trims like the XLT, Lariat, and Platinum have Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 features like Reverse Sensing and Auto High Beams. Buyers can add the Assist 2.0 suite with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering, Speed Sign Recognition, and Connected Build-in Navigation.
